What makes Slovenia special
Slovenia is small, green and remarkably calm outside Bled and Ljubljana.
In the morning you have coffee on the Ljubljanica river, by afternoon you are at Lake Bled, and at the weekend you hike in the Julian Alps or paddle the Soča. Distances are short, so you spend little time in the car.
There is even a slice of Adriatic coast, with Piran as a pretty little town. For Ljubljana there is the Ljubljana City Card, which can be worth it if you plan on several sights plus city transport. Our experiences list what is included. The rest of the country is best explored without a tight plan.

Ideal for: Nature lovers, Hikers, City breaks, Active travellers

How to get there and get around
Flight time from Zurich
approx. 1 h 20 min
Direct to Ljubljana (seasonal), or by car or train in one long travel day
Getting around
A rental car is the easiest way to reach lakes and mountains, and traffic drives on the right. Motorways need a vignette, which rental cars usually include, so ask the rental company. Buses and trains link the larger towns, with fewer services in the mountains. In Ljubljana you can manage on foot.

- LJULjubljana Jože Pučnik Airport
A selection of international airports.

Where to go

Ljubljana
A small, relaxed capital with a largely car-free old town, riverside cafés and a castle above it all. Works well for a long weekend.

Bled and Bohinj
Lake Bled with its island is the picture everyone knows. Lake Bohinj sees fewer visitors, is quieter and makes a good hiking base.

Soča Valley
A turquoise river, rafting, kayaking and trails around Bovec and Kobarid. A good fit if you like to stay active.

Piran and the coast
A short stretch of Adriatic with Venetian-flavoured lanes. Good for a day by the sea without driving to Croatia or Italy.

Where to sleep

Bled and Bohinj
Guesthouses and small hotels by the lake, book early in summer
Soča Valley
Campsites, lodges and apartments

You need no special vaccinations. In the mountains and by rivers, take weather changes seriously, and ticks occur in forests. Ask your Swiss insurer whether hiking and water sports abroad are covered.
We are happy to advise you on travel insurance.
Good to know
- Language
- Slovenian
- Plugs
- Type C, F
- Dialling code
- +386
- Traffic
- Drives on the right
- Tipping
- Around 10 percent in a restaurant is a nice gesture, otherwise just round up.
- Internet
- Many places have free Wi-Fi and coverage is good. If you stay longer or need lots of data, compare roaming and an eSIM.
- Customs
- You pay in euros here, cards work almost everywhere, and cash is handy for mountain huts. Sockets are type C and F, so two-pin Euro plugs (type C) mostly fit, Swiss three-pin type J plugs do not, and a travel adapter solves it. In nature, stay on marked paths and take your rubbish with you.
How long to stay
Recommended length
5 to 8 days
Suggested route
- Ljubljana (2 nights) with the old town and castle
- Bled and Bohinj (2 nights) for lakes and hikes
- Soča Valley (2 nights) for activities on the river
- Optionally Piran on the coast (1 night)
Frequently asked questions
Which season suits Slovenia best for me?
Lakes, hiking and city time work from May to September. If you want snow, the Alps have it from December to March.
What does a day cost?
Roughly CHF 70 to 120 for simple to comfortable travel, closer to CHF 200 with nicer rooms. A rental car and activities come on top.
Do I need more than my ID for Slovenia?
As a Swiss citizen usually not, and no visa is needed for holidays. Glance at the FDFA travel advice before you leave in case something has changed.
Can I reach the lakes and the Soča Valley without a car?
Bled works by bus or train with a short connection. For Bohinj and the Soča Valley a rental car is far more convenient, as buses run less often.
Is Slovenia straightforward for young travellers?
Day to day, yes, the country is compact and quiet. For hiking and water sports, weather and skill matter, and the emergency number is 112.
How many days do I need?
Three to four days cover Ljubljana and Bled. With five to eight you can add the Soča Valley and the coast.
