What makes Malta special
Malta is small and sunny, and varied for its size.
On an island you can cross in an hour you get Neolithic temples, a honey-coloured capital, cliffs, bays and dive sites. English is an official language, so finding your way is easy, and the flight from Zurich is just over two hours.
Valletta, Mdina and the Three Cities tell the island's layered history. Gozo and Comino are the quieter side, with walking trails and clear water. Among our experiences you will find the Heritage Multisite Pass, which can be worth a look if you want to visit several sites. Whether it suits you depends on your plans.

Ideal for: Short breaks, History fans, Divers, Language learners

Where to go

Valletta
A compact, largely car-free old town of palaces, churches and views over the Grand Harbour. It feels calmest early in the morning or in the evening.

Mdina and Rabat
A quiet walled town inland with narrow lanes and wide views. Rabat adds catacombs and small cafés.
The Three Cities
Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua sit across the water from Valletta. Fewer crowds, lots of history and nice views over the harbour creeks.

Gozo and Comino
Gozo is greener and calmer than Malta, with cliffs, trails and dive sites. Comino holds the well-known Blue Lagoon, best visited early in the day.

- Traffic
- Drives on the left
- Tipping
- If no service charge is added, about 10 percent in a restaurant is normal. For taxis and cafés, rounding up is enough.
- Internet
- You get a signal almost everywhere, and most places to stay have Wi-Fi. Check your Swiss provider's roaming terms or get an eSIM.
- Customs
- Malta uses the euro, cards are widely accepted, and a little cash is handy for small purchases. Sockets are British style (type G), so you'll need an adapter. Dress modestly in churches, and some shops close on Sundays and public holidays.

Frequently asked questions
Which months are good for Malta?
May, June, September and October are usually warm without being too hot. July and August are busy and hot, and winter is mild but windy and wet.
What daily budget should I expect?
As a rough guide, about CHF 70 to 130 for simple to comfortable travel, and closer to CHF 230 with upscale rooms. Accommodation is the biggest cost.
Do I have to bring a passport, or is the ID enough?
For short trips to Malta most Swiss travellers simply take their ID card, and a visa is normally not needed. The FDFA travel advice says if anything differs.
How do I get to Gozo and Comino?
A ferry runs to Gozo, and boats to Comino leave from Malta and Gozo. In high summer, start early in the day.
Can I get by with English?
Yes, English is an official language next to Maltese and is understood almost everywhere. That makes Malta easy for short trips and language stays.
Is Malta safe for a young traveller?
Day to day it is straightforward. In party areas like St. Julian's, watch your drinks and valuables. The emergency number is 112.
How many days is enough?
Four to five days cover Valletta, Mdina and a day on Gozo. A week leaves time for diving, walking and beach days.
